Playing with your Bankroll

Sunday, November 9, 2008

The easiest way to know how to play with your bankroll is by asking yourself these following questions:

1. What is your skill level? Are you skilled enough to play with higher stakes? With higher stakes come more advanced players.

2. How high in stakes should I go? Most players will agree that one should play where you are getting at least 300 big blind bets and no more than 500 big blind bets with your bankroll. This doesn't mean play higher stakes if it is within your bankroll and above your skill level.

3. How important is my bankroll to me? Do I feel like risking more and possibly loosing it? Will I survive if I loose my bankroll? It can happen. As one should know... poker has its ups and downs.

4. Am I willing to swallow my pride and move down in stakes if I am losing my shirt?

Once you have come up with these answers then you are on your way to making a sound decision and hopefully protect your bankroll. Discipline isn’t easy for anyone on any level. Whether you are a professional or a mere amateur, we all have bad days and bad beats and can lose more than we care to admit. The key is to make sound judgment calls and know when it’s time to move on or even stop for a bit.
